Now, the second most common reason for cylinders
failing is due to the Pressure and
Temperature Relief Valve (PTR Valve) being blocked or corroded on the inside.
The Purpose of the PTR Valve is to open up automatically while heating to relieve pressure
usually at 1400 Kpa and all PTR Valves should be released at least every 6 months to help clear the
inside of the valve from rust deposits building up around the Valve spring.
Once the spring rusts it will either take more pressure to open which can cause the cylinder to
burst, or it can jam in the open position releasing a slow amount of water indefinitely which will
cause a big water bill and a huge gas or electric bill as the hot water service will be
heating up many times a day instead of only once.
One of the benefits of our Plumbers checking the Hot water service is that we will teach the
owner or tenant how and when to use the PTR Valve manually which will help the life of the Hot water
service too.
